Hippocrates said it 2,400 years ago: "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."

Modern science has only deepened what he intuitively understood. The food you eat doesn't just fuel your body — it communicates directly with your genes, modulates your immune system, shapes your gut microbiome, and determines whether the inflammation in your body rises or falls today.

That's not a metaphor. That's biochemistry.

And it means that every meal is either a step toward health or a step away from it. Not in a guilt-inducing way — in an empowering one. You hold more control over your biology than any pharmaceutical intervention currently offers.

Let's talk about how to use it.

The Three Metabolic Villains

If I had to identify the three dietary factors responsible for the most chronic disease in my patients, they would be:

1. Refined Sugar and High-Fructose Corn Syrup Your liver processes fructose differently than glucose. In excess, fructose drives fatty liver disease, elevated triglycerides, insulin resistance, and systemic inflammation. The average American consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar per day — three times the recommended amount. This isn't a willpower failure; it's a design failure. These substances are engineered to override your satiety signals.

2. Industrial Seed Oils Canola, soybean, sunflower, corn, and cottonseed oils are manufactured through high-heat, chemical-solvent extraction processes that oxidize the polyunsaturated fatty acids — turning them into pro-inflammatory compounds. These oils now make up a staggering portion of calories in processed food. Your grandparents didn't eat them. Your body doesn't know how to handle them.

3. Ultra-Processed Food Products Anything with more than five ingredients that you couldn't find in a kitchen a hundred years ago falls into this category. The emulsifiers, preservatives, artificial flavors, and refined starches in these products disrupt gut flora, spike blood sugar, and promote overeating by bypassing your natural fullness cues.

What to Eat Instead

I don't believe in rigid diets with a brand name. I believe in principles.

Eat real food. If it grew from the earth, walked on the earth, or swam in the ocean, your body knows what to do with it. If it was manufactured in a facility and has a shelf life measured in years, proceed with skepticism.

Eat the rainbow. The pigments in colorful vegetables and fruits — the anthocyanins in blueberries, the lycopene in tomatoes, the lutein in leafy greens — are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds your immune system relies on. Variety here isn't aesthetic preference; it's biological necessity.

Prioritize protein. Protein is the most satiating macronutrient and the least likely to be stored as fat. It also provides the amino acid building blocks for every neurotransmitter in your brain. Aim for 0.7–1 gram per pound of lean body mass.

Include healthy fats. Avocado, olive oil, wild-caught fatty fish, nuts, and seeds provide the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and omega-3 fatty acids that every cell membrane and hormone in your body requires.

Respect fiber. Your gut microbiome feeds on fiber. Low-fiber diets starve the microbiome, leading to inflammation, immune dysregulation, and poor mood. Target 30+ grams of fiber daily from vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

A Practical Starting Point

Don't try to overhaul everything at once. Choose one of these for the next two weeks:

  • Replace one processed snack with a whole food (apple with almond butter, carrots with hummus, a handful of walnuts)
  • Add a green vegetable to every dinner
  • Swap one seed oil for extra virgin olive oil or butter

Small consistent changes compound into transformation. I've watched this happen hundreds of times in my practice.

Your body is remarkably resilient. Given the right inputs, it knows exactly how to restore itself.
