When I sit across from a patient and they list their diagnoses — arthritis, hypothyroidism, type 2 diabetes, chronic fatigue, heart disease, fibromyalgia, psoriasis — I don't see a collection of unrelated problems.

I see a single thread running through all of them.

Chronic inflammation.

This isn't a fringe idea. It's now one of the most established frameworks in modern medicine, supported by thousands of peer-reviewed studies. The Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded multiple times for research into inflammatory pathways. The Lancet, JAMA, Nature Medicine — every major medical journal has published landmark research confirming what integrative physicians have been observing clinically for decades.

Acute vs. Chronic Inflammation

To understand the problem, you need to understand the difference.

Acute inflammation is essential and life-saving. You cut your finger — blood rushes to the area, immune cells arrive, the wound swells and heats up, healing occurs. Without this process, minor injuries become fatal infections.

Chronic low-grade inflammation is the opposite. It's a state where the immune system is persistently, inappropriately activated — not in response to an acute threat, but as a background condition. Like a car alarm that never turns off. Like a pilot light that should flicker and go out, but burns continuously instead.

And over months and years of that chronic activation, the immune system begins to damage the very tissues it was designed to protect.

The Inflammatory Diseases You May Not Recognize as Inflammatory

Many of my patients are shocked when I explain that their diagnosis is fundamentally an inflammatory condition:

Heart disease: The cholesterol narrative you've been told is incomplete. Atherosclerosis (arterial plaque) develops in the context of arterial inflammation. Oxidized LDL (damaged by inflammation and oxidative stress) is what lodges in damaged arterial walls — not LDL itself. A recent analysis found that half of all heart attack patients had "normal" cholesterol but elevated CRP (a marker of systemic inflammation).

Type 2 Diabetes: Chronic inflammation impairs insulin receptor signaling, driving insulin resistance independently of glucose intake.

Depression: A significant subset of depression cases are now understood as inflammatory in origin. Elevated inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-alpha, CRP) are found in the blood of depressed patients and directly impact neurotransmitter production and neuroplasticity.

Alzheimer's Disease: Neuroinflammation — inflammation in brain tissue — is now considered a central mechanism in Alzheimer's pathology, not just a downstream consequence.

Autoimmune Diseases: Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Hashimoto's, Crohn's — all characterized by an immune system in inflammatory overdrive that has lost tolerance for self-tissue.

The Five Drivers of Chronic Inflammation

1. Diet — Industrial seed oils, refined sugar, ultra-processed foods, and imbalanced omega-6:omega-3 ratios are the most direct dietary drivers of systemic inflammation. (See our article on the anti-inflammatory diet for specifics.)

2. Gut Dysbiosis and Leaky Gut — When the intestinal barrier is compromised, bacterial endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides, or LPS) enter the bloodstream and trigger a profound systemic inflammatory response. This is one of the most significant and underappreciated inflammatory drivers.

3. Chronic Psychological Stress — Cortisol is anti-inflammatory in acute, short bursts. But chronic stress leads to cortisol resistance — where cells stop responding to cortisol's anti-inflammatory signals — and the immune system becomes dysregulated.

4. Poor Sleep — Even one night of disrupted sleep measurably elevates inflammatory cytokines. Chronic sleep deprivation creates a persistent pro-inflammatory state.

5. Environmental Toxins — Heavy metals, pesticide residues, plasticizers (like BPA), and air pollutants all activate inflammatory pathways. This is an area where small, consistent choices (organic produce for the "dirty dozen," filtered water, non-toxic cookware) make meaningful cumulative differences.

What You Can Do Starting Today

You don't need to wait for a diagnosis to begin reducing inflammation. The interventions are the same whether you're preventing or recovering:

  • Eat real, whole food with maximum polyphenol diversity
  • Restore omega-3:omega-6 balance
  • Heal the gut microbiome with fiber and fermented foods
  • Prioritize 7–9 hours of sleep
  • Move your body daily
  • Practice stress management with whatever works for you: meditation, nature, prayer, breathwork

Inflammation is not your fate. It's a response to inputs — and inputs can be changed.
