Let me tell you something you were never taught in school:

Creativity is not a talent. It is a skill.

It is not something you either have or you don't. It is not a divine gift distributed at birth to artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs while the rest of us were handed a consolation prize of analytical ability.

Creativity is a cognitive process that can be understood, practiced, and systematically cultivated — by anyone willing to engage with it intentionally.

I came to this understanding slowly. I spent the first years of my career operating almost entirely from the analytical left brain — diagnosis, protocol, evidence — while treating creativity as something that happened to other people. Somewhere along the line, I realized that the most transformative breakthroughs in my practice came not from following established protocols more carefully, but from asking different questions. From connecting disparate observations in unexpected ways. From looking at a patient's constellation of symptoms and seeing a pattern that didn't fit the conventional framework.

That is creativity in medicine. And once I started training it intentionally, everything changed.

What Creativity Actually Is

Neuroscience has given us a cleaner picture of creativity in the last decade, and it's more interesting — and more accessible — than the romantic myth.

Creative insight emerges from the coordinated interaction of three brain networks:

The Default Mode Network (DMN): Active during mind-wandering, daydreaming, and unconstrained thought. This is where unusual, distant associations form — the kind of connections that never arise when you're focused narrowly on a problem.

The Executive Control Network (ECN): Your prefrontal cortex's goal-directed attention system. This evaluates and refines the ideas that emerge from the DMN, assessing whether they're useful or relevant.

The Salience Network: Acts as a switch between DMN and ECN, detecting when a promising idea (from the DMN) deserves focused attention (from the ECN).

Highly creative people have unusually strong connections between these networks — they can simultaneously generate unusual ideas AND evaluate them with critical rigor. The two aren't opposites; in creative flow, they cooperate.

The practical implication: creativity requires both unfocused mind-wandering (to generate novel associations) AND focused evaluation (to refine and apply them). Most people do one or the other, but not both deliberately.

The Conditions That Kill Creativity

Before discussing what cultivates creativity, it's worth being honest about what destroys it:

Constant distraction: A mind that never stops consuming can never generate. Every moment filled with social media, podcasts, and entertainment is a moment not available for the incubation and mind-wandering that precede creative insight.

Fear of being wrong: The single greatest suppressor of creative output. Perfectionism — the insistence that the first draft must be good, the first idea must work, the first attempt must succeed — is the enemy of generative thinking.

Premature evaluation: Judging ideas as they emerge, rather than generating freely first, shuts down the divergent thinking process before it can run. Creativity requires separating the generative phase from the evaluative phase.

Information deprivation: Creativity is fundamentally recombination — connecting existing ideas in novel ways. Without a rich, diverse input of knowledge and experience, the combinatorial pool is shallow.

Practices That Build Creative Capacity

Daily Freewriting (15 minutes) Before any other work, write without stopping, without editing, without judgment. Morning Pages (Julia Cameron's practice from The Artist's Way) — three handwritten pages every morning — is one of the most reported creative practices among working artists, writers, and innovators across fields.

The rule: keep the pen moving. Whatever comes out is fine. The goal is to bypass the inner critic and access the generative, associative thinking that precedes rational control.

Exposure to Cross-Domain Ideas Read broadly — across your field and beyond it. Read history, biology, poetry, economics, physics, philosophy. Creative breakthroughs most often emerge at the intersection of domains, and you can't make cross-domain connections without cross-domain input.

Many of the most innovative thinkers in any field are voracious generalists: they bring frameworks from unrelated domains to old problems and see them freshly.

Walking Without Headphones A Stanford study found that creative output (as measured by divergent thinking tests) increased by 81% while walking compared to sitting. The effect persists for a short time after returning indoors.

Walking activates a gentle DMN engagement — the unconstrained, associative thinking mode — while the physical rhythm creates a low-demand background that frees cognitive resources for loose connection-making.

Incubation: Step Away Deliberately When stuck on a creative problem, the least effective strategy is to continue staring at it. The most effective is deliberate disengagement — sleep on it, take a shower, go for a walk, work on something entirely different.

The unconscious processing that occurs during incubation is real and productive. Many of history's most celebrated creative breakthroughs (Kekulé's discovery of benzene's ring structure, Archimedes' Eureka moment) occurred precisely when the person stepped away from the problem.


Your creative capacity is not fixed. It is a function of your conditions, your practices, and your willingness to engage with the uncomfortable, generative chaos that precedes every good idea.

The genius is in there. Build the conditions for it to emerge.
