Thinking Differently: Creative Problem Solving for Everyday Life
Most of the problems you face in life don't have a right answer.
They have better answers and worse answers. They have options you've considered and options you haven't thought of yet. They have dimensions you've noticed and dimensions you've ignored.
Creative problem solving is the capacity to find more and better options — to see the problem differently, to reframe the question, to approach from an angle that conventional thinking doesn't reach.
This isn't only for artists. It's not only for entrepreneurs. It's for parents navigating difficult children, physicians treating complex patients, managers developing difficult teams, individuals rebuilding their lives after setbacks.
The most important problems any of us face require creative thought. And creative thought can be trained.
The Diverge-Then-Converge Model
The most robust framework for creative problem solving distinguishes between two fundamentally different cognitive modes:
Divergent Thinking: Generating as many options, ideas, and possibilities as possible without judgment. This mode opens the solution space.
Convergent Thinking: Evaluating, selecting, and refining ideas to identify the best options. This mode closes the solution space.
The critical insight: these modes must be kept separate. When they run simultaneously, convergent thinking kills divergent creativity before it can generate the unconventional options that might be the real solution.
The process: diverge first (quantity, no judgment), then converge (quality, rigorous selection).
Six Creative Problem Solving Techniques
1. Reframe the Problem Einstein reportedly said: "If I had an hour to solve a problem, I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about the solution."
Most people jump to solutions for problems they haven't clearly defined. Reframing asks: Am I solving the right problem?
A hospital noticed that patients complained the elevators were too slow. The obvious solution: faster elevators (expensive). The reframe: why do patients care? Because waiting is boring. The actual solution: mirrors in the elevator lobbies. Complaints dropped immediately.
2. Reverse the Problem Instead of asking "how do I solve this?", ask "how could I make this problem worse?" Then reverse the answers.
This technique — inversion — forces you to examine the problem from a completely different angle, often revealing solutions that direct thinking misses. Charlie Munger attributes much of his success to this practice: he inverts every major question he faces.
3. Random Association Take a random word (flip open a dictionary, use a random word generator) and force connections between that word and your problem.
A team trying to improve bicycle helmets used the word "pillow." Pillows are soft, comfortable, filled with air, shaped to contour to a body. This led to concepts for helmets with air-filled inner padding, adjustable fit, and softer materials — several of which became patented innovations.
The goal isn't to directly solve the problem with the random word. It's to activate unusual neural pathways that wouldn't fire during conventional problem analysis.
4. Six Thinking Hats (Edward de Bono) De Bono's framework assigns six "hats" (roles) for thinking about a problem, ensuring all dimensions are considered:
- White Hat: facts and data only
- Red Hat: emotions and intuitions
- Black Hat: critical judgment (what could go wrong)
- Yellow Hat: optimistic assessment (what could go right)
- Green Hat: creative and alternative possibilities
- Blue Hat: process and organization (meta-thinking about the problem-solving itself)
In a group setting, this structure prevents groupthink and ensures the problem is examined from multiple dimensions systematically rather than defaulting to the dominant cognitive style in the room.
5. The 5 Whys For problems with unclear root causes: ask "why" five times in succession, with each answer becoming the input for the next "why."
Problem: I'm always late to morning appointments. Why? I'm always running behind in the morning. Why? I don't leave enough time to get ready. Why? I always underestimate how long things take. Why? I'm optimistic about time in the evening, pessimistic in the morning. Why? I don't account for getting ready time when planning the night before.
Root cause: evening planning that doesn't account for morning reality. Solution: Plan tomorrow's departure time the night before, working backward from the appointment.
6. Analogical Thinking How does nature solve this problem? How would a child approach it? How would a competitor in a different industry think about it? What does this problem look like in another domain?
Many of the most powerful innovations came from analogical transfer: Velcro from burr-seed attachment, the structure of the internet from neural networks, surgical techniques from aeronautical engineering.
The richest source of novel solutions is almost always outside the domain where the problem lives.
Your capacity to solve problems creatively is one of the most durable, most transferable, most liberating skills you can develop.
