Feynman had a rule: if he couldn't explain a concept clearly enough for a 12-year-old to understand it, he didn't really understand it himself. And so he would return to the source material, identify the gap, and work until the explanation became genuinely simple.

The method he used became one of the most powerful learning techniques ever described. And it's available to anyone willing to use it.

The Four Steps of the Feynman Technique

Step 1: Choose a concept and write it at the top of a blank page.

Not a whole subject. A concept. A single idea, principle, mechanism, or process. "How does the immune system recognize a virus." "What compound interest actually means." "How a P/E ratio reflects investor expectations."

Step 2: Explain it as if teaching it to someone with no background knowledge.

Write out your explanation in plain language — no jargon, no technical shorthand, no borrowed phrases from the textbook. Imagine your audience is a curious 12-year-old who will ask "but why?" after every sentence.

This is where the power lives: the moment you hit something you can't explain simply, you've found a gap in your understanding. That feeling of fumbling for words? That's the learning moment.

Step 3: Identify the gaps — and go back to the source.

When you can't explain something clearly, mark it. Then return to your source material — the textbook, the lecture, the original paper — and study specifically that gap. Not everything. Just the gap.

This is far more efficient than re-reading an entire chapter: you're doing targeted, surgical repair of the specific gaps in your understanding.

Step 4: Simplify further and use analogies.

Once you've patched the gaps, return to your explanation and simplify it further. Use analogies — comparisons to things your audience already understands. The best analogies aren't perfect; they're good enough to create a bridge to understanding.

Feynman was a master of analogies precisely because he genuinely understood his subjects well enough to map them to simple, familiar frameworks.

Why This Works Neurologically

The Feynman Technique works because it forces active retrieval and generative processing — two of the most evidence-backed learning strategies in cognitive science.

When you write an explanation from memory (rather than copying from a source), you activate retrieval practice — strengthening the memory trace in the process of accessing it. When you construct analogies and connect the concept to familiar knowledge, you perform elaborative encoding — weaving new information into existing neural networks rather than storing it in isolation.

The result is knowledge that is flexible, transferable, and accessible under pressure — not just recognizable when you see it on a multiple-choice test.

Where to Use It

The Feynman Technique is most powerful for:

  • Conceptual subjects where understanding is more important than memorization (medicine, science, philosophy, economics, law)
  • Technical skills that require genuine comprehension of underlying principles (programming, mathematics, engineering)
  • Any subject where you're struggling — if it's not clicking, the technique almost always reveals why

It's less suited to pure memorization tasks (vocabulary, dates, names) — for those, spaced repetition flashcards are more efficient.

A Practical Application Right Now

Take one concept from your current area of study or professional work. Open a blank document or notebook. Set a timer for 20 minutes.

Write everything you know about that concept as if teaching it to someone intelligent but completely unfamiliar with the subject.

Notice where you slow down. Notice where you reach for jargon because you can't find a simpler word. Notice where your explanation goes circular.

Those moments are your teachers. Follow them back to the source. Then return and complete the explanation.

Repeat this process with the most important concepts in your field, and you will develop a quality of understanding that most people — even most professionals — simply never attain.

Feynman didn't have a better brain than you. He had a better relationship with the truth of what he knew and didn't know.
