Hermann Ebbinghaus was a German psychologist who, in the 1880s, did something no scientist had done before: he rigorously measured his own memory.

Over years of self-experimentation, he memorized thousands of nonsense syllables and tracked exactly how quickly he forgot them. What emerged was the forgetting curve — one of the most replicated findings in all of psychology.

The curve looks like this: immediately after learning something, you begin forgetting it. Within 24 hours, you've forgotten 60–70% of the details. Within a week, 90%+ is gone unless you revisit it.

But here's what Ebbinghaus also discovered: each time you revisit information, the forgetting curve is reset — at a higher level, and with a slower rate of decline.

The first review might keep information accessible for a few days. The second review extends that to a week. The third to a month. The fourth to several months. Eventually, with enough spaced reviews, information becomes essentially permanent.

This is spaced repetition — and it is the single most evidence-backed learning technique in cognitive psychology.

Why Most People Don't Use It

The problem is that spaced repetition feels less productive in the moment.

Cramming information right before a test feels effective because you can measure immediate improvement. Studying today what you studied three days ago feels inefficient because it's uncomfortable — you've forgotten some of it, and that feels like failure.

But that forgetting is the mechanism, not the obstacle.

Psychologists call this desirable difficulty: the cognitive effort required to retrieve something you've partially forgotten strengthens the memory trace more powerfully than reviewing something you still clearly remember. The struggle is the learning.

How Spaced Repetition Works in Practice

The original spaced repetition system was a physical flashcard box (the Leitner system), where cards moved between compartments based on how well you recalled them:

  • Cards you answered correctly moved to a longer review interval
  • Cards you answered incorrectly returned to daily review

Today, this algorithm is built into software that calculates optimal review timing for each piece of information individually, based on your personal performance history.

Anki is the gold standard — a free, open-source flashcard application used extensively in medical education (medical students routinely create 20,000–30,000 card decks across their training). The algorithm adapts to your performance and schedules each card for review at the optimal moment: just before you would have forgotten it.

Studies on medical students using Anki show retention rates of 80–90% six months after learning, compared to 30–40% for students using traditional study methods.

Building Your Own Spaced Repetition Practice

What to put in your decks:

  • Facts you need to know long-term (medical terminology, language vocabulary, historical dates, scientific formulas)
  • Concepts and their explanations (what is inflammation? how does the forgetting curve work?)
  • Quotes or passages you want to internalize
  • Professional knowledge relevant to your field

Card design principles:

  • One question per card — atomic, specific questions retrieve specific memories
  • Use images when possible — visual encoding is more durable than verbal encoding
  • Write in your own words — generating the answer yourself (vs. recognition) produces deeper encoding
  • Make questions specific — "What does cortisol do?" is too broad. "What happens to thyroid hormone conversion when cortisol is chronically elevated?" is testable.

The daily habit: The power of Anki requires consistency. Even 10–15 minutes of daily review produces remarkable retention over time. Mature decks (cards you know well) have very few daily reviews; your daily load is manageable once the system is established.

Combining Spaced Repetition With Other Techniques

Spaced repetition handles retention. But it works best when combined with:

  • The Feynman Technique for initial understanding (so you're encoding comprehension, not just words)
  • The Memory Palace for ordered information or information that resists flashcard format (speeches, procedures, narratives)
  • Active recall during initial learning (test yourself immediately after reading, before creating the flashcard)

The result is a learning system that is, in scientific terms, close to optimal: you learn deeply, retain durably, and retrieve effortlessly.
